IL MITO DI NARCISO TRA PASSATO PRESENTE E FUTURO / THE MYTH OF NARCISSUS BETWEEN PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE /

... ..Il mito di Narciso ci fa capire quanto sia importante da sempre per l'uomo, riuscire a vedere la propria immagine riflessa. Infatti tentativi in questa direzione, ci sono stati fin dall'epoca Neolitica ( 1700-800 a.C). Ma lo Specchio come oggetto d'arte nasce con la civiltà egizia, mentre quello di tipo moderno, ottenuto dal vetro, compare solo nel XVI secolo, a Venezia. Da questo momento , lo specchio si diffonde sempre più come complemento d'arredo, oltre che come oggetto portatile e personale, trovando il momento di massima fortuna nel Settecento, il secolo che ama la luce. Dopo quest'epoca il ruolo dello specchio non sarà più lo stesso, ma le tipologie del passato continueranno a ripetersi per tutto l'Ottocento.

THONET E LA SUA GENIALE SEDIA N° 14 / THONET AND HIS ORIGINAL CHAIR N° 14

Bentrovati Carissimi Lettori! Avete mai sentito parlare della sedia in legno curvato di THONET? Uno dei prodotti più fortunati della storia dell'ebanisteria? Ebbene.. oggi ci avventureremo proprio nella sua affascinante storia.

Michael THONET (nella foto, al centro con i suoi cinque figli) nacque nel 1796 a Boppard-am-Rhein. Si formò come ebanista ed una volta ultimato l'apprendistato aprì una bottega nella città natale. Tra i trenta e i quarant'anni iniziò a condurre esperimenti basati sull'uso del vapore per costruire mobili in legno curvato. In un primo momento, riuscì a produrre solo singole parti, come schienali di sedie, che inserì in mobili realizzati con elementi convenzionali, ossia diritti..ma i risultati ottenuti furono talmente interessanti che il Cancelliere METTERNICH lo invitò a Vienna per realizzare parte degli arredi di palazzo Liechtenstein.

Michael THONET (pictured in the center with his ​​five children) born in 1796 in Boppard-am-Rhein. Trained himself as a cabinet maker and opened a shop in his hometown, completed his apprenticeship. Between thirty and forty years began to conduct experiments based on the use of steam to build curved wooden furniture. At first, he managed to produce only individual parts such as chair backs, who inserted in furniture made with conventional elements, rights..but the results were very interesting so that the Chancellor METTERNICH invited him to Vienna to realize part of the furnishings of the Liechtenstein Palace.
  

Nel 1842, THONET perfezionò il processo di piegatura a vapore tanto da ottenere un brevetto internazionale che proteggeva 'i metodi meccanici e chimici' dalle imitazioni. Il Legno (soprattutto il faggio) una volta ammorbidito grazie all'esposizione del vapore o all'immersione in acqua bollente,  poteva essere modellato con l'aiuto di una pressa. Una singola verga poteva cosi trasformarsi in più elementi evitando tipi di imballaggio complessi e ricorrendo solo a viti e dadi. Nel 1853, fonda la 'GEBRUDER THONET' insieme ai suoi cinque figli. Solo pochi anni dopo, negli anni '50, Thonet ottenne la Prima Grande Commessa che lo avrebbe reso un Noto Ebanista. Incaricato di progettare una nuova sedia per il caffè viennese Daum, disegnò la strepitosa n° 14. Questa sedia era un articolo d'arredo funzionale destinato alla popolazione e non un simbolo di ricchezza. Il suo successo fu tale che prima della fine del secolo ne vennero prodotti e venduti quindici milioni di esemplari. In 1842 , THONET perfected the process of steam bending so as to obtain an international patent that protected ' the mechanical and chemical methods ' from imitations. The wood (especially beech) once softened thanks to the exposure of the vapor or immersion in boiling water, could be modeled with the aid of a press. A single rod could thus become more complex elements avoiding various types of packaging and using only nuts and bolts .
In 1853, he founded the ' Gebrüder Thonet ' along with his five children. Just a few years later, in the 50s, Thonet had the First Great Job that would make him a known joinery . Commissioned to design a new chair for the Viennese coffee Daum , designed the amazing n° 14. This chair was a functional article of furniture intended for the people and not a symbol of wealth . CONTESTO STORICO: 
L'ultimo decennio del 1800 fu un periodo di instabilità politica ma anche di modernizzazione della società. Vediamo perchè!
CONTESTO POLITICO: in Francia il mondo politico fu scosso da una serie di scandali, l' Inghilterra continuava a rivaleggiare con essa nella formazione di un immenso impero coloniale e l' Impero Asburgico subiva un inarrestabile declino e doveva lottare contro le richieste di cambiamento che venivano dall'interno. Si accrescevano inoltre il peso e l'influenza di Germania e Stati Uniti, sempre più importanti sul piano economico.
MODERNIZZAZIONE DELLA SOCIETA': Fu un periodo di grandi progressi industriali e di rapida crescita delle città e dei centri urbani. Le Classi medio-alte godevano di un periodo di relativa pace e prosperità, ma tra le classi lavoratrici la povertà era in aumento.


HISTORICAL CONTEXT:

POLITICAL BACKGROUND: In France, the political world was rocked by a series of scandals, the England continued to rival with France in the formation of a vast colonial empire and Hapsburg Empire suffered an inevitable decline and had to fight against the demands for change that came from interior.  L' ART NOVEAU / UN'ARTE 'NUOVA':
Il sentimento di reazione contro la produzione in serie di merci di qualità scadente, conseguente alla Rivoluzione Industriale fu all'origine di una nuova forma di espressione artistica: l'Art Noveau. Il movimento derivò il suo nome dalla galleria aperta nel 1895 a Parigi da Samuel Bing, dove si vendevano oggetti dal design innovativo. L' Art Noveau si ispirava alla natura e alle linee ondulate di piante e fiori. Alla fine del secolo, il movimento era diventato uno stile che abbracciava tutti i campi artistici, dall'architettura alla progettazione di interni, dai manifesti alle vetrine, alle ceramiche, ai gioielli, alla scultura all'arredamento. Localmente assunse vari nomi tra cui 'Liberty' e 'Modern Style' in Gran Bretagna, 'Stile Floreale' in Italia, 'Jugendstill' in Germania e 'Sezessionstil' in Austria.

 ART NOVEAU / A 'NEW' ART' :
The feeling of reaction against the mass production of goods of poor quality, resulting from the Industrial Revolution gave rise to a new form of artistic expression: Art Nouveau movement. This took its name from the gallery opened in 1895 in Paris by Samuel Bing, where they sold items with an innovative design. L 'Art Nouveau was inspired by nature and the wavy lines of plants and flowers. At the end of the century, the movement had become a style that embraced all fields of art, architecture, interior design, posters, shop windows, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture and furnishings. Locally assumed various names including 'Liberty' and 'Modern Style' in Britain, 'Floral Style' in Italian, 'Jugendstil' in Germany and 'Sezessionstil' in Austria.

Il FERRO DA STIRO: Oggetto Rustico e di Arte Popolare / The IRON: Subject Country and Folk Art


Bentrovati Carissimi Lettori! Oggi dedicheremo questo post ad un raffinato Oggetto Rustico e d'Arte Popolare: il 'FERRO DA STIRO' ...
Oggetto d'uso domestico, il ferro da stiro del tipo che veniva scaldato sul fuoco o con la brace rientra oggi a pieno titolo nel mercato collezionistico, soprattutto se si tratta di un esemplare del 1800, secolo in cui i ferri venivano ormai prodotti su scala industriale e per lo più in ghisa.

Composto da una larga piastra in metallo dalla forma appuntita all'estremità anteriore e da una solida impugnatura in ferro e legno ... tra il XIV e il XVIII evolve attraverso tre tipologie:

Come ogni Promessa che si rispetti.. oggi ci avventureremo nella Storia di un Fantastico Arredo...
Quando i Mobili destinati alla Scrittura si diffusero nell'arredo domestico, nacquero diverse tipologie. Tra queste, il 'Secretaire à abattant', un mobile francese alto e stretto realizzato per la prima volta negli anni sessanta del XVIII secolo a Parigi dall'ebanista Jean - Francois Oeben.

Simile ad un armadio quando era chiuso, aveva il fronte superiore incernierato e apribile dall'alto, con piano interno rivestito in pelle per essere usato per la scrittura. Nel corpo inferiore si aprivano cassetti o ante con un vano a cassetti o ripiani. In molti esemplari, un altro cassetto era inserito nella fascia della cornice ed era spesso nascosto da una decorazione.

NAPOLEONE III: 'Designer' di Lusso e Comfort! / NAPOLEON III: 'Designer' of luxury and Comfort!

Buongiorno nostri Cari Lettori! Eccoci pronti a parlare della grande influenza che Napoleone III ebbe sugli arredi tanto da permetterci di utilizzare il termine 'Designer' nel post precedente..
A differenza del Conciliante Luigi Filippo, Napoleone III (1850-1870) si schierò apertamente a favore del passato classico come elemento di consolidamento del potere. Ci fu così un ritorno ai canoni di Luigi XIV e ai motivi decorativi Luigi XV e Luigi XVI.

Unlike the conciliatory Louis Philippe, Napoleon III (1850-1870) openly sided in favor of the classical past as part of the consolidation of power. There was thus a return to the canons of Louis XIV and the decorative motifs Louis XV and Louis XVI.


I Legni scuri, in particolare mogano ed ebano, tornarono in auge, accostati però a nuovi materiali come la ghisa che dava un tocco di attualità ai mobili, ed avorio e madreperla, usati per creare un forte contrasto tra le loro superfici opaline e quelle del legno bruno.
Anche le decorazioni in bronzo dorato, segno di prestigio sociale e di valore del mobile non mancarono e vi fu un ritono alle impiallacciature e agli intarsi complessi, ispirati alla tecnica del famoso ebanista francese 'Charles Boulle' per creare quell'effetto di fastosa decadenza che può essere considerato il marchio distintivo degli arredi del Secondo Impero.

The Dark woods, especially mahogany and ebony, came back into vogue, however, combined with new materials such as cast iron which gave him a touch of relevance to furniture, and ivory and mother of pearl, used to create a strong contrast between their surfaces and those of opal brown wood.  Even the decorations in gilt bronze, a sign of social prestige and value of the furniture no lack and there was a return to the veneers and inlays complex, inspired by the technique of the famous French Cabinetmaker 'Charles Boulle' to create that effect of lavish decadence that can be considered the hallmark of the furniture of the Second Empire.
