Michael THONET (nella foto, al centro con i suoi cinque figli) nacque nel 1796 a Boppard-am-Rhein. Si formò come ebanista ed una volta ultimato l'apprendistato aprì una bottega nella città natale. Tra i trenta e i quarant'anni iniziò a condurre esperimenti basati sull'uso del vapore per costruire mobili in legno curvato. In un primo momento, riuscì a produrre solo singole parti, come schienali di sedie, che inserì in mobili realizzati con elementi convenzionali, ossia diritti..ma i risultati ottenuti furono talmente interessanti che il Cancelliere METTERNICH lo invitò a Vienna per realizzare parte degli arredi di palazzo Liechtenstein.

Michael THONET (pictured in the center with his five children) born in 1796 in Boppard-am-Rhein. Trained himself as a cabinet maker and opened a shop in his hometown, completed his apprenticeship. Between thirty and forty years began to conduct experiments based on the use of steam to build curved wooden furniture. At first, he managed to produce only individual parts such as chair backs, who inserted in furniture made with conventional elements, rights..but the results were very interesting so that the Chancellor METTERNICH invited him to Vienna to realize part of the furnishings of the Liechtenstein Palace.

Nel 1842, THONET perfezionò il processo di piegatura a vapore tanto da ottenere un brevetto internazionale che proteggeva 'i metodi meccanici e chimici' dalle imitazioni. Il Legno (soprattutto il faggio) una volta ammorbidito grazie all'esposizione del vapore o all'immersione in acqua bollente, poteva essere modellato con l'aiuto di una pressa. Una singola verga poteva cosi trasformarsi in più elementi evitando tipi di imballaggio complessi e ricorrendo solo a viti e dadi. Nel 1853, fonda la 'GEBRUDER THONET' insieme ai suoi cinque figli. Solo pochi anni dopo, negli anni '50, Thonet ottenne la Prima Grande Commessa che lo avrebbe reso un Noto Ebanista. Incaricato di progettare una nuova sedia per il caffè viennese Daum, disegnò la strepitosa n° 14. Questa sedia era un articolo d'arredo funzionale destinato alla popolazione e non un simbolo di ricchezza. Il suo successo fu tale che prima della fine del secolo ne vennero prodotti e venduti quindici milioni di esemplari. In 1842 , THONET perfected the process of steam bending so as to obtain an international patent that protected ' the mechanical and chemical methods ' from imitations. The wood (especially beech) once softened thanks to the exposure of the vapor or immersion in boiling water, could be modeled with the aid of a press. A single rod could thus become more complex elements avoiding various types of packaging and using only nuts and bolts .
In 1853, he founded the ' Gebrüder Thonet ' along with his five children. Just a few years later, in the 50s, Thonet had the First Great Job that would make him a known joinery . Commissioned to design a new chair for the Viennese coffee Daum , designed the amazing n° 14. This chair was a functional article of furniture intended for the people and not a symbol of wealth .
