QUEST' OGGI SI VIAGGIA ALLA SCOPERTA DELLA PORCELLANA! / TODAY IS TRAVELLING TO THE DISCOVERY OF PORCELAIN..

Bentrovati Carissimi Lettori!

Welcome back Dear Readers ! Today we continue our trip to the discovery of Ceramic, venturing into its final stage: the 'Porcelain''. Have you ever had the opportunity to learn about its history or simply what materials compose it? If you have not had the chance .. Enjoy all this along with us!

COME E' FATTA / HOW ITS MADE:

Porcelain is a particularly valuable variety of ceramic that is characterized by compactness, Hardness, Waterproofing and for white translucent sheen which it owes its name.
Its Essential Components are: Kaolin (white clay fine, firm and non fuse) and the Petunzè (feldspathic rock that, melting to high temperature, binds together the particles of clay, creating the pasta glazed white and translucent) to which is added the quartz.
To get the finished product takes three firings: the first at 700/800 ° which creates the biscuit partially porous; the second at 1300/1500 ° after which the product is painted and the third at 800/1000 ° after the cooling on the item is done, it was decorated with the colors derived from metal oxides. There is also, a porcelain-free paint called 'Biscuit'.

For many centuries, Porcelain was the prerogative of the East. Known since the third century BC in China, came to this country with a good level of quality in the ninth century, to find the highest degree of perfection in the eleventh century. Only in the Late Middle Ages, it was known and appreciated in Europe, after they had arrived the first specimens through the Marco Polo shipment (until the sixteenth century was exclusively for kings and nobles as rare and very expensive).

SOMETHING STARTED TO CHANGE WHEN... More quantity arrived in the West Indies thanks to the route traced by the Portuguese navigator Vasco de Gama and at the same time were undertaken the first attempts to imitate.
For two centuries, however, got a soft paste porcelain (also called Half Porcelain) differs from the true hard paste porcelain. Its dough is composed of a mixture of white clay and various other ingredients but without Kaolin (the main element of the true Porcelain) and is then baked at lower temperatire. THE RESULT? A translucent white porcelain, with a body more malleable and less stable, fragile and easily scratched glass that since the paint piombifera which is  covered not is fused with the porcelain and is not very durable.

The First important achievement in middle Porcelain took place in Florence in the manufacture of Physicians, founded by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Francesco I, around 1575. Were made jugs, vases and plates decorated mostly in blue monochrome , but also in polychrome yellow, green and purple.

In the seventeenth century.. when was closed the Medici workmanship, a good manufacturing of porcelain tender took place in France in the factories of Rouen and Saint-Cloud.
At the beginning of the eighteenth century however, in Germany, was finally discovered the secret of the original Porcelain thanks to Johann Friedrich Böttger, ceramist and alchemist. Obtained initially a hard red sandstone similar to that of China and in 1708, replacing the red clay with Kaolin .. He made the First European Porcelain.

Despite the precautions to keep a secret formula, it soon spread throughout Europe during the century, first in Vienna (1718) and then in Venice (1720). In France, they began to produce hard porcelain in the second half of the century, began to be used after domestic raw materials thanks to the discovery of deposits at LIMOGES. During this period, many factories sprang up everywhere .. but the Best Manufacturing continued to be the German, Italian and French.

UN VIAGGIO ALLA SCOPERTA DELLA CERAMICA (Prima Parte) / A JOURNEY TO DISCOVER THE CERAMIC (First Part)

Bentrovati Carissimi Lettori!

Dear Readers Welcome back ! Today's post will not be a simple post , but an adventure in the wonderful history of a material to which we have always heard about but which perhaps we never had full knowledge .. we are talking about ..  The CERAMIC !Ceramic is an important sector of the antique market , given its size and the variety.. so.. a good preparation on the forms , materials and designs of different eras is very important! We have said materials , even if the field is unique as it seems it is always Ceramic, but depending on the ingredients and the cooking you can get very different results! Let's find out everything there is to know about this fine material ..

COME E' FATTA / HOW ITS MADE :

The name CERAMIC derives from the ancient Greek word KERAMOS or "antlers" and although it was originally referred to any product of art clay, then passed to indicate the artifacts in which clay is the main ingredient. This in fact, unable to bear the high temperature of the furnace is mixed with other substances such as silica, quartz, sand, etc.. The various ingredients, reduced to powder, are then mixed with water and get a dough that must be left to dry and then that can be shaped (by hand, to the lathe or mold) and baked a first time in order to make the permanent form; then, to obtain the tightness of the building, it's covered with clearcoats and it's subjected to a second firing.

Initially, this work was aimed at creating everyday objects so simple and elementary, but from the third millennium BC, thanks to the use of the lathe and the oven, artifacts acquired an artistic value The first kind of Ceramic was  POTTERY, with the porous body because without uncoated, then variously coated.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT: the antique ceramic is of eastern origin, except the Greeks of the sixth and fifth centuries BC with Figures in red and black, the only native, who was picked up by the Romans and then repeatedly imitated during the modern era.

Even in the Middle Ages, the history of Ceramic continued to depend from 'East, through the importation of Chinese products in the Middle East and the Arab rule in the Iberian Peninsula (eighth century), who introduced the art of MAIOLICA which was Terracotta glazed and decorated. This art, known as Hispano-Moorish Pottery, reached between the 'twelfth and thirteenth century in Italy, where several centers were able to elaborate styles, types and original techniques, making of' ITALY between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries, the country most important at European level in the field of ceramic.

From the mid-seventeenth century were instead the manufactures across the Alps to win, especially France and the Netherlands, while England excelled in the eighteenth century thanks mainly to the well-known entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood.

So..another two kinds of ceramic are GRES ie a vitrified clay dough very hard and dense with shiny surface and waterproof and PORCELAIN (which we will cover in the next post for its particular characteristics.)
